On 29 October 2026, the ECB held its deposit facility rate at 2.50%, main refinancing rate at 2.65% and marginal lending rate at 2.90%. It noted tighter financing conditions since the previous meeting and made no commitment to a future rate path.

Start with the next contractual reset.
A borrower’s next interest payment is determined by a contract, not directly by the announcement from a central bank. A floating facility has a reference rate, a spread and a reset schedule. A fixed facility has an agreed price for a defined period. Without those details, an unchanged policy setting does not establish what the next bill will be.
For an international business, currency is another boundary. A euro-area decision is relevant to euro financing; it is not a general instruction to lenders in every market. Even within that currency, offers can differ because lenders assess security, maturity and repayment capacity differently. These are analytical distinctions, not claims about individual loans in the release.
Availability can change before the quoted rate does.
Consider a hypothetical revolving facility renewed at the same percentage but with a smaller limit. The borrower has not received an equivalent offer: it may now need more cash of its own or a second source of finance. A shorter maturity can similarly bring the next refinancing negotiation closer without changing today’s nominal price.
Conversely, a higher spread may accompany terms that better match the operating cycle. Neither offer can be evaluated responsibly from the rate alone. Amount, maturity, fees, collateral and drawdown conditions belong in the comparison. The distinction is especially useful when interpreting a headline about stable policy as a promise of stable credit access.
Separate a planning assumption from an obligation.
An expected reduction in financing costs is a planning assumption. A repayment date is an obligation. If a business plan works only when the former arrives before the latter, the apparent headroom depends on a forecast. Keeping those two categories visible makes uncertainty easier to discuss without pretending to predict the next meeting.
A simple sensitivity exercise can compare unchanged, higher and lower financing costs without assigning invented probabilities. It can then examine a separate delay in customer receipts. Price risk and timing risk should not be merged: a manageable interest bill does not prevent a cash shortage when revenue arrives after a scheduled repayment.
For readers assessing a lender, the equivalent question is how quickly assets and funding reprice. Existing loans and new liabilities need not adjust together. An unchanged policy rate therefore leaves plenty to analyse in the structure of a balance sheet. The useful conclusion concerns contractual exposure, not a confident guess about the next central-bank move.
