On 10 September 2026, the ECB announced a 25 basis point increase in its three key interest rates. From 16 September, the deposit facility rate will be 2.50%, the main refinancing rate 2.65% and the marginal lending facility rate 2.90%. The ECB did not commit to a predetermined rate path. The exposure is in the reset dates.
For a lender funded in euros, the immediate business question is when the funding bill changes relative to income from the loan book. A floating-rate facility and a portfolio of fixed-rate consumer loans can respond on very different schedules. The policy announcement alone cannot establish the size of that exposure.
Treasury and product teams need a common view of reference rates, contractual spreads, floors and reset dates. A lender operating across several countries should keep that view at legal-entity and currency level. A group average can obscure a local business that must refinance before its existing loans mature.
New business and the back book need different decisions.
For new lending, the choice is commercial: absorb some of the funding increase, change the customer price or adjust the product mix. Each option affects conversion and expected credit losses differently. A higher quoted yield is not necessarily a better risk-adjusted return if it changes which borrowers accept the offer.
Existing agreements present a different constraint. Fixed-rate assets do not acquire a new yield simply because the funding model has changed. For variable-rate products, the applicable contract and local customer-notification requirements determine implementation. Cross-border teams should avoid treating a common currency as a single set of customer terms.
Price the currency mismatch separately.
A lender earning local-currency revenue while borrowing in euros has two exposures: interest-rate repricing and foreign-exchange risk. Combining them into one funding-cost assumption makes it difficult to see which management action would help. Model currency conversion and any hedging costs separately from the contractual rate reset.
The useful management output is a monthly margin and liquidity bridge for each material portfolio. It should show when pressure emerges, how much comes from maturing funding and which new-business volumes remain viable. That supports a targeted origination plan, rather than an indiscriminate price increase across markets.
