In a speech on 29 October, Piero Cipollone reiterated Europe’s move to T+1 on 11 October 2027. The ECB plans changes to the T2S night-time process for June 2027. This is preparation for a future transition, not evidence that the general migration has already happened.

Work backwards from completion.
For readers following European market infrastructure, the useful starting point is the last moment at which cash and instructions must be ready. A trading decision may be immediate while the operational chain behind it is not. Each internal approval consumes part of the available window, even when the final platform processes instructions quickly.
An illustrative cross-currency purchase makes the dependency visible. The buyer needs usable settlement currency by the relevant deadline, not merely an accepted foreign-exchange order. Treasury approval, funding availability and the receipt of confirmed instructions must fit into one sequence. This is a process example, not a claim that every transaction follows the same route.
The exception queue is part of the product.
A clean demonstration tells little about a trade with an incorrect account detail. The stronger test follows detection, notification, correction and acceptance by the other participant. If ownership changes between teams, the handover itself needs a deadline and an unambiguous status. Otherwise each team can finish its own task while the transaction remains unresolved.
Operational readiness should therefore be examined with realistic interruptions: a missing confirmation, a late amendment or an unavailable approver. The purpose is to identify the remaining recovery window. A successful test should show that the parties agree on what has completed and what still requires action.
Distinguish three forms of speed.
Fast execution, fast messaging and final settlement are different promises. Confusing them makes it difficult to judge whether a new platform has removed a constraint or simply moved it elsewhere. Readers do not need to assume that one technology will replace every existing process to evaluate an improvement.
A useful account of the transition connects the clock to responsibility: which participant supplies the instruction, who ensures funding and who resolves an exception? The investment case for automation then becomes specific. It can be assessed by the manual steps it removes and the recoverable time it creates, rather than by a general claim of modernisation. The broader lesson for financial infrastructure is that an end-to-end service is only as credible as its treatment of the transaction that does not proceed exactly as planned.
