On 23 September, the Bank of Russia reported RUB 490 billion in microfinance loan originations for Q2 2026. Consumer originations declined while the share of medium- and longer-term consumer loans increased. Lending through credit limits also became more active. The total origination figure is not a consumer-only measure.

A longer relationship is an investment decision.
For international non-bank lenders, the Russian release offers a product-design comparison, not evidence of a global market trend. A move toward longer customer relationships needs a cash-flow model that distinguishes accrued income from collections. Funding expense, servicing costs and credit losses should be placed on the same timeline as customer repayments before a retention strategy is judged attractive.
One useful internal comparison holds the customer risk profile broadly constant and varies contractual maturity. The analyst can then compare cumulative cash recovery at the same observation date. A younger long-duration book has not yet demonstrated its full repayment performance. Apparent improvement in delinquency should therefore be examined alongside loan age and the principal still exposed to future payment obligations.
Underwriting continues after account opening.
A reusable facility introduces decisions about availability as well as the initial advance. Teams should define when payment behaviour triggers a limit review, what information must be refreshed and who can resolve an exception. These are proposed operating controls, not a claim that the Russian announcement creates equivalent legal duties in other jurisdictions.
Management reporting should separate unique customers, approved limits, utilisation and disbursements. Repeated drawings by the same customers can increase transaction counts without widening distribution. Treasury also needs a scenario in which available facilities are drawn together. Risk teams need a different scenario: customers initially pay on time but weaken after several cycles, while unused availability remains substantial.
Measure retention against independent repayment.
Repeat activity becomes more informative when it is paired with evidence that customers can service debt without another advance. A lender could examine closely spaced repayment and redrawing events to understand customer needs. The pattern alone does not establish distress; it identifies a cohort for further analysis rather than providing an automatic reason to decline.
Before increasing acquisition spending, the product committee should agree the point of cash recovery, the conditions for changing availability and the evidence that would stop expansion. A bounded pilot gives the team room to observe repayment performance before committing a larger funding envelope. Customer lifetime value should emerge from realised collections and sustainable use, rather than from counting successive advances as separate commercial wins.
