Reconstruct the operating cash cycle.
A lender needs to understand when an order becomes revenue, when revenue becomes cash and which obligations already claim that cash. Platform receipts or bank transactions provide useful evidence, but they may show only part of the business. Distinguish recurring operations from transfers, seasonality and exceptional inflows. Missing information should remain uncertainty rather than being converted into an optimistic forecast.
Match repayment to the underlying business.
Review repayment schedules against the borrower’s operating cycle and downside scenarios. Strong observed turnover can conceal weak margin, concentrated customers or a need to rebuild inventory. Separate a change in data visibility from a change in the borrower’s economics. The Russian study develops hypothetical cash-flow cases and operational questions for underwriting and monitoring. World Bank indicator definitions and historical IFC research provide context; they do not prove that alternative data improves every model or that all small firms share the same financing constraints.
